What we deliver

In a high-rise building, waste has to travel a long way down — and how it gets there affects hygiene, fire safety and the daily experience of every occupant. A well-engineered refuse chute moves waste quickly and cleanly from each floor to a ground-level collection chamber. A poorly designed one blocks, smells and becomes a fire and pest risk running through the heart of the building.

TechMEPi Engineering designs and supervises refuse chute systems for residential towers, hotels, hospitals and mixed-use developments across East Africa and the Indian Ocean region. We treat the chute as a building service in its own right — sized, ventilated, fire-protected and coordinated with the structure, not left as an afterthought in a riser.

Our approach

Design starts with the waste itself: the number of dwellings or rooms served, expected waste volumes and the collection strategy at ground level. From this we size the chute diameter, select hopper door positions and levels, and plan the vertical route so the chute stays straight, accessible and clear of habitable rooms. Intake points are placed in ventilated lobbies rather than opening directly into corridors or apartments, and access panels are positioned so blockages can be cleared without breaking into finished walls. Hopper doors are specified for heavy daily use — self-closing, sealed and robust enough to survive years of service.

Hygiene and odour control are engineered in. The chute is ventilated at roof level to keep air moving upwards and away from intake floors. Washdown and sanitising provisions allow the full length of the chute to be cleaned, and the refuse chamber is designed with impervious finishes, floor drainage and its own ventilation so it can be hosed down after every collection. Fire protection includes fire-rated chute construction, self-closing fire-rated hopper doors, a shutter at the chamber and sprinkler protection at the top of the chute, all coordinated with the building's overall fire strategy.

Standards and coordination

Our chute designs follow the principles of BS 1703 for refuse chutes and hoppers together with local building regulations and fire codes. Because we also design the surrounding plumbing, drainage, ventilation and fire services, the chute is fully coordinated with the rest of the MEP installation in the BIM model — clash-checked against structure, ductwork and pipework before construction begins.

During construction we inspect the installation at each stage, verify fire-rated components and door operation, witness washdown and ventilation performance, and hand over a system your facilities team can operate and clean easily. The outcome is simple: waste goes down, odours go up and out, and the building stays clean and safe.

Common Questions

Which buildings actually need a refuse chute?

Chutes earn their place in buildings of roughly five storeys and above — residential towers, hotels and hospitals — where carrying waste down by lift or stair becomes impractical and unhygienic. For lower-rise projects we assess whether a chute, a dedicated waste lift strategy or ground-level storage serves the building better. The right answer depends on occupancy, waste volumes and the collection arrangements available locally.

Are refuse chutes a fire risk?

An unprotected shaft running the height of a building would be — which is exactly why chutes are engineered as fire-rated construction. Our designs specify self-closing fire-rated hopper doors at every intake, a fire shutter at the collection chamber, sprinkler protection at the head of the chute and separation from escape routes. Designed this way, the chute complies with the building's fire strategy rather than undermining it.

How do you stop the chute smelling?

Three ways, working together. The chute is ventilated at roof level so airflow moves continuously upwards, away from intake doors. Hopper doors are self-closing and sealed, so lobbies stay isolated from the shaft. And the system includes washdown provisions and a drained, ventilated refuse chamber so both the chute and the chamber can be cleaned regularly. Odour problems are almost always a design or cleaning failure — both are preventable.

Can a chute system support waste separation and recycling?

Yes. Options include twin chutes for general and recyclable waste, or a single chute paired with a sorting arrangement at the collection chamber. The right approach depends on space in the riser, the building's waste management plan and local collection services. We advise on this during concept design, because retrofitting separation into a single-chute building later is far more disruptive.
